The 41st US President, George H.W. Bush (father of 43rd President George W. Bush) was Vice President from 1981 to 1989 under President Ronald Reagan. When Reagan was hospitalized for surgery, he notified Congress that Bush would be acting as President. Bush was elected President in 1988, succeeding Reagan.
This action became necessary under the 25th Amendment (1967) which provides for temporary disability of the President, and was only first "officially" invoked by President George W. Bush while undergoing a colonoscopy in 2002, during which Vice President Richard Cheney became acting President.
