For most of the decade, Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) was the President of the US.

Reagan was the 40th US President and served from January 20, 1981 to January 20, 1989. He succeeded Jimmy Carter, the 39th President, and was, in turn, succeeded by his Vice-President, George H. Bush, who became the 41st President.

Jimmy Carter (1977 - 1981) until Jan. 20, 1981

Ronald Reagan (1981 - 1989) until Jan. 20, 1989

George H. W. Bush (Bush Sr.) (1989 - 1993) until Jan. 20, 1993
