Benjamin Franklin was the eighth child born to Josiah and Abiah Folger Franklin (Josiah's second wife). Josiah was born in Ecton, England and moved with his firat wife, Anne Child Franklin, to Boston. Anne died in 1698. The following year, Josiah married Abiah Folger, who was from a Puritan family in Nantucket. (Her descendents actually were the ones who founded Folgers Coffee.)

Josiah Franklin was Benjamin Franklin's father. He was a tallow chandler, a soap-maker and a candle-maker. Josiah was born at Ecton, Northamptonshire, England on December 23, 1657.

Abiah Folger was Benjamin Franklin's mother. She was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts, on August 15, 1667. She was born into a Puritan family that was among the first Pilgrims to flee to Massachusetts for religious freedom, when King Charles I of England began persecuting Puritans. They sailed for Boston in 1635.

Abiah was Josiah's second wife, and they were married on July 9, 1689.

Benjamin was their eighth child, but was Josiah Franklin's fifteenth child and tenth and last son.
