John Mitchell Jr, "The Fighting Editor", never married. But his brother Thomas had 2 children, Roscoe and Rebecca (never married). Roscoe went on to edit The Richmond Planet after John Mitchell Jr's death in 1929. Roscoe and his wife Lilian had 9 children of which two are still living in Richmond Virginia.
The legacy of John Mitchell Jr is alive. His descendants in each generation became teachers, journalists, lawyers, entrepreneurs and artists. My father worked the printing press at the paper as a kid and went on to write for the Afro American Newspaper, among others, and was the news director for WANT Radio from 1955 to 1982. Still alive and kicking!!
