At that time, Poland did not exist. It had been partitioned between the Kingdom of Prussia (later part of Germany), Austria (later part of Austria-Hungary), and the Russian Empire in 1795.

Those living in the portions then in the possession of Germany and Austria-Hungary would have been fighting with the Central Powers, while those living in the portion controlled by Russia would have been allied with Russia, France, England, etc.

It was at the end of WWI that Poland was restored as the Second Polish Republic in 1918. World War II was begun when Germany invaded Poland in September of 1939.
