Violent protest erupted in Chicago which caused civil unrest among AA leaders. With the KKK taking action against the civil rights leaders (bomb set off outside Jr's hotel room), the message of the campaign was overwhelmed with tension. During multiple arrests, policemen were violent. Violent towards children which became the main protesters. Children were the main protesters because the bread winners were the parents, children could miss a few days of school and not economically affect the family. Riots broke out and the Campaign failed and moved on.
Two famous civil rights leaders who believed people should protest without using violence were Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. They believed in using boycotts, passive resistance, and mass civil disobedience as forms of protest.

Yes. It is part of freedom of speech. It is a part of a free country's rights. It is part of democracy. It lets people or organisations or governments know what others think. A country that does not allow protest is not giving people civil rights. As long as protests are not violent, then people should be able to protest and should do so.
