Best Answer

The barbarians were not from Rome or the Roman Empire. The term barbarian referred to peoples which lived outside the empire. The Visigoths (Goths of the west) were allowed to settle in the lower Danube area of the empire by emperor Valens. The Ostrogoths (Goths of the east) originally settled in Pannonia (eastern Austria and western Hungary).

The Vandals, Sueves Alans and Burgundians from central Europe invaded Gaul. The Alemanni from southern Germany invaded northeastern Gaul and Switzerland. The Franks form Holland expanded into Belgium and northern Gaul. The Angles, Saxons, Jutesfrom northern Germany migrated to Britain.
