The Constitution does not give the vice president much power- only to chair the Senate and vote if there is a tie and until fairly recently, the vice-president did little else and the strength of a vice-president while in office is almost irrelevant.

Some vice-presidents were leaders before and after they were vice-president.

So here as some that were more prominent.

  • Thomas Jefferson- was an important leader before and after he was VP
  • John C. Calhoun-- became a force in the Senate and in the South
  • Martin Van Buren was a powerful cabinet member and later president
  • Richard Nixon- attracted attention while VP and went on to win 2 presidential elections
  • Lyndon Johnson- was a force in the Senate and won a landslide presidential election ( later fell from power due to Vietnam)
  • Hubert Humphrey- powerful Senator and later presidential candidate
  • Harry Truman - won a term as president and was a force in his party
  • Theodore Roosevelt- became a strong president
  • George W. Bush- went on to be president
  • Calvin Coolidge- became a popular president and was a strong party leader.
  • Al Gore - lost a close presidential election and shared in a Nobel prize.

Why is there more presidents than vice presidents?

The last time the total number of Presidents and Vice Presidents was the same was near the end of the 19th century, when McKinley was President and Hobart was Vice President. Then after Vice President Hobart died McKinley needed a new running mate. When he was reelected, Theodore Roosevelt was his new Vice President, and the number of V.P.'s then exceeded the number of Presidents by one. The difference of one remained until Franklin Roosevelt was President. He changed Vice Presidents twice (he had a total of three). So at that point, when Roosevelt started his 4th term, the total of vice presidents was three more than the total of presidents. The difference of three remained until Gerald Ford was appointed to replace Vice President Agnew, who resigned in 1973. The difference then became four, where it remains to this day (43 presidents and 47 vice presidents).
