Historians will always look for the so-called Order of Battle to see what generals were present during a major battle. This is true for today as well. The Order of Battle also reveals what armies are commanded by each general. At Antietam the generals were:

For the Union

Army of the Potomac led by Major General George B. McClellan. He led 70,000 troops.

Under his command were generals:

Hooker, Franklin, Sumner, Burnside, Porter and Mansfield.

The Union's cavalry division was led by Pleasanton


For the Confederacy, the Army of Northern Virginia was led by Major General Robert E. Lee. He had 39,000 troops. His generals were as follows:


Longstreet and Jackson. As can be seen Lee had two major armies. The cavalry was led by JEB Stuart
