A full list of the convicts in the First Fleet is detailed on a series of plaques in the Darling Harbour precinct near the end of the walkway past the submarine. The First Fleet consisted of 11 ships carrying 1,487 people. The convicts were the criminals sent to Australia from England in the 1700s and early 1800s. British prisons were overflowing, and so the decision was made to establish a convict settlement in Australia. The convicts of the First Fleet were from England, Scotland and Wales, while later convicts were Irish and some other nationalities.
