Portugal, a small nation on the western edge of Spain, led the way in exploration. By the 1400s, Portugal was strong enough to expand into Muslim North Africa. In 1415, the Portuguese seized Ceuta (say oo tah) on the North African coast. The victory sparked the imagination of Prince Henry, known to history as Henry the Navigator.

There are many Portuguese explorers. To name a few: Vasco Da Gama, Pedro Alvares Cabral, Bartolomeu Dias, Ferdinand Magellan, John (Joaõ) Cabrilho, and more more.

Columbus himself studied in Lisbon, married a Portuguese woman, and lived on the island of Porto Santo part of the Portuguese islands of Madeira, in the Atlantic. He approached the king of Portugal, was rejected because of Portuguese interest in the Indian ocean, and charts indicating Columbus was wrong in his predictions. He then went to the Spanish monarchs asking for sponsorship.

Places discovered by Portuguese explorers - California, Açores, Maderia, Brazil, the sea route around Africa, to India, and China - establishing the first European contact with many African and Asian peoples, and reaching Indonesia and the spice islands - consequently also establishing their empire with outposts in Angola, Mozambique, Goa-India, Macau-China which was the last colonial posession and returned to China in 1999 after approx 500 years of Portuguese influence and governance.

Other places discovered or visited by Portuguese explorers - Labrador, New Foundland, Australia, and many islands through out all the oceans of the world.

Portugal, like most of Europe, has been inhabited by humans for tens of thousands of years - since before the last Ice Age.

So it's not really possible to say who "discovered" portugal, since people have been living there since well before recorded history.

Who were some of the explorers that went to Portugal?

Being a European country, you cant say Portugal was discovered by explorers in the conventional sense. Ofcourse the human species didnt evolve around it, but the explorers is a concept that tracks to the XVIth century, by which time Portugal had been well established. The Romans for instance conquered that territory, but you cant say they discovered it. It did however send explorers to Asia, Africa, Oceania and the American continent.
