The first people from Europe may have been pre-clovis people. Due to an ice age they had a culture similar to that of the Inuit which enabled them to travel the shortened distance across the ocean which of course had a large glacial covering it.
It is possible that early Irish explorers had reached North America, but the evidence is not as strong as that for Leif.
Lief Ericson and his crew can take credit for being the first Europeans in North America.
