The first 'King of England' was King Henry II (until this point kings were titled 'King of the English') who took the throne in 1154. Henry II was followed by his son Richard (Richard the Lionheart). Richard was succeeded by his younger brother John. The next Kings of England that followed were John's son Henry III and his son Edward I.

The first king to rule England was Athelstan, whose title was "King of the English" (his father Edward the Elder used the title "King of the Anglo-Saxons", and did not rule Northumbria). He was succeed by his brothers Edmund and then Eadred, and then the kingdom was divided between Edmund's two sons Eadwig and Edgar the Peaceful. It was re-united when Eadwig died, making Edgar the fourth king to rule England. He was succeeded by his son Edward the Martyr.

So:

The first five Kings of England with that title were

  • Henry Plantagenet (Henry II)
  • Richard Coeur-de-Lion (Richard I)
  • John Lackland (King John)
  • Henry of Winchester (Henry III)
  • Edward Longshanks (Edward I)

The first five kings to rule England were

  • Athelstan
  • Edmund
  • Eadred
  • Edgar the Peaceful
  • Edward the Martyr

but they were kings of the English, not of England, i.e. of the people, not of the land.
