Between May 7 and June 3, federal losses were 50,000 men, Confederate 32,000. The North could replace its losses fully, but the South could not. US Grant's consistent use of frontal assaults and poor maneuvering cost the Union this battle.

∙ 8y agoThe Battle of Cold Harbor was part of the Overland Campaign. In six weeks in the Spring of 1864, three armies were engaged in a series of horrific battles including Cold Harbor. This particular battle was a victory for the Army of Northern Virginia. The other two armies were Union armies. The Army of the Potomac, led by General George Meade, with US Grant close by. Pressing Lee's army was the Army of the James led by General Butler. The South was severely outnumbered but had built excellent fortifications. Union troops were severely tested due to frontal assaults launched against Confederate fortifications. This was Lee's last major victory.
