Stalin was the leader of Russia at the time, he ordered the Russian troops to Stalingrad to stop the Germans from their advance to Moscow. The Russian troops stopped all railways so Germans wouldn't have access to supplies. Hitler was the German Third Reich leader at the time as well and it was his army that pushed to Stalingrad to take over Russia.
In total, 2.65 Million People fought at the Battle of Stalingrad. 1.27 Million were Axis Troops and 1.37 Million were Soviet Troops. Overall only 650,000 People survived the Battle, 459,500 Being Soviet Troops and 169,500 Being Axis Troops.

For the Allies, it was only the USSR due to Nazi Germany occupying the countries such as the Ukraine which was under USSR control before World War 2.
