Paul Revere wasn't the only midnight rider messager. Two other patriots, William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott rode around, alerting other patriots, " The Redcoats are coming! The Redcoats are coming!" But Revere was the only one earning credit for his actions. They say that Paul Revere rode around saying, '' The British are coming, the British are coming!'' but he didn't because the colonies still considered themselves as British citizens.

There was no black man who rode "with" Paul Revere. However, there were other men who rode to warn the colonists of the arrival of British troops. In addition to two white men, there was a mixed-race (what would today be called "biracial") man from New Hampshire named Wentworth Cheswell. He rode north to warn the residents of New Hampshire, while Paul Revere's ride took him through Medford (Massachusetts) and towards the western part of the state.

Wentworth Cheswell (1746-1817): Few people have ever heard of Wentworth Cheswell, yet in 1775 he rode alongside Paul Revere to alert everyone that the British were coming. As the story goes, the two men eventually split off -- Cheswell rode north and Revere rode west. In addition to being a patriot, Cheswell was a respected schoolteacher, church leader, and historian. He also became America’s first black judge in 1768. That’s seven years before America won her independence!
