The interior of the statue was designed by Maurice Koechlin who worked for Gustaf Eiffel. It was sculpted by the French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi. As I recall, it was given to us in 1869, assembled in France, then disassembled and marked, piece by piece, sent to America on a ship and then had to sit in storage and wait for while before it was finally reassembled.

∙ 14y agoDesigned by Eifle it was built by Bartholdi. We were supposed to pay for the base but money was not forthcoming so the publisher William Randolph Hearst promised to list the names of anyone who donated.
