The Confederates did not have a General-in-Chief until February 1865, too late to make a difference. The job was given to the only possible candidate, Robert E. Lee.

Two months later, he surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to his opposite number, Ulysses S. Grant, who had been appointed Union General-in-Chief in March 1864.

Grant's predecessors in that post were:

Winfield Scott - excellent, but far too old

George McClellan - young and popular, but so cautious that his loyalty was questioned

Henry Halleck - intellectual type who believed in occupying territory, rather than destoying armies.
