In 1863, Western Union operations were bent on finally capturing Vicksburg, an important city fortress on the Mississippi River. To that end the Union under generals Sherman and McPherson wanted to cut off rail links from the deep South to Vicksburg. The South needed to protect Jackson, Mississippi, keeping rail links intact. The result was a Union victory on May 14, 1863.
