During World War II, the Axis forces in North Africa were defeated by two different Allied forces, one taking offensive action from the east and one taking offensive action from the west. The former was composed mostly of British troops, while the latter was mostly American. They met in Tunisia in early 1943 before delivering the knock-out blow to the Germans and Italians in May of that year.

first answer:

Technically yes, an allied force made of mostly British, Americans, and Canadians with support from smaller forces defeated the joint German-Italian forces controlling North Africa.

second answer:

I would add, that of the British Commonwealth countries, it was primarily Australians, Indians, New Zealanders & South Africans that had troops & pilots fighting & finally defeating the Axis in North Africa (Libya & Egypt). American, British & Free French forces landed in western-North Africa (Morocco & Algeria) and defeated the Vichy French in November 1942, then moved into Tunisia to fight the Germans & Italians (which included those that were retreating from Libya and being chased by the British 8th Army). Axis forces were finally cleared out of North Africa with their mass surrender in Tunisia on May 13, 1943 to the British Commonwealth, Americans & Free French.
