The first known translation of the Hebrew scriptures from the original Hebrew and Aramaic is called the Septuagint ('LXX'), a translation into the Greek language. This was undertaken from the fourth century onwards by unknown scribes in the Egyptian Diaspora. The early Hebrew scriptures should not be thought of as yet a 'Bible', as a specific canon of scriptures was not recognised until the first century CE.

He was an English Scholastic philosopher, theologian, lay preacher, translator, reformer and university teacher at Oxford in England, who was known as an early dissident in the Roman Catholic Church during the 14th century.
