I wrote "The Monwuzo's Sea Song", for a book called Old Merlaine, a series of poems about an imaginary place. The poem is constantly being put printed without my being told about it. So when I've nothing better to do I play the game of hunt the anthology. Anyone can tell me a publisher I haven't yet hassled I'd be grateful. I wrote the poem many years ago in ten minutes, sitting in the early morning on the floor of a flat in West Kensington, as two new poems were needed to bulk out the book. First person to put it into an anthology was Charles Causley. When told one of my poems was going to be in the Anthology of Salt-Sea verse I guessed it would be the Moonwuzo's Sea Song as it is the poem I like best in the book, though it was written so fast, and is quite mysterious. I'm still writing, and illustrating children's books, with the publisher Serafina Press, from Eyemouth, in the Scottish Borders. Cara Lockhart Smith

In the poem "The Song of the Whale," the poet may have compared the sea to a forest to convey the idea of vastness and depth. Just like a forest is filled with mystery and hidden secrets, the sea is also seen as a place of unknown wonders and untold stories. The poet may have used this comparison to evoke a sense of awe and reverence for the sea.
