A couple reasons, the first being that the engine has next to no oil on the top half of the engine. It's been sitting overnight so it has all dripped back down into the pan. Secondly because the pistons have contracted just a little due to the cold and have enough room to knock around until they get heated up and expand to proper size.
Unless your engine knocks all the time, it's normal.
