Western Australia is mostly barren desert and semi-arid plains. Although Australia is a large country (big enough to be a continent), only a small percentage of the total area is capable of being utilized for housing or agriculture. This is the main debate point on the topic of population growth arguments.

i think central Australia is sparsely population because there are not many service stations such as police station's, hospitals, fire stations ...... etc and most importantly there are not many houses for people to live in and the land is very dangerous to build houses. the land is not flat there houses might fall down.Another reason is probably due to the continential effect experienced due to the distance from the sea as the land is further inland as compared to the coastal cities of places such as Sydney or Melbourne, which experience cooler summers and warmer winters as compared to the continential effect which brings about hot and humid temperatures during winter and very cold temperatures during the winter.Hence, central Australia is mainly sparsely populated due to the fact that both coastal and inland areas experience a drastic difference in temperature range.

Why is Mauritania so sparsely populated?

Mauritania has a low population density due to its large desert areas that are not suitable for human habitation. Harsh climatic conditions, limited access to water sources, and sparse vegetation make it difficult for people to live in many parts of the country. Population distribution is also influenced by historical nomadic lifestyles and economic activities that are concentrated in certain regions.

What is sparssely populated means?

Sparsely means only occassionally or thinly. So, sparsely settled means people occupy the space, but spread out. Example: The sparsely settled colony of 5000 square acres only had 40 residents, with most of them living in town and some living on the outskirts.
