Its historic significance is as a remembrance of the birth of Jesus, the Christ. In general practice it has been largely overshadowed, even among Christians, as a civil holiday characterized by the exchanging of gifts. Presumably this is loosely inspired by the gifts of the Magi which they presented to Jesus when they visited him. Their gifts were symbolic and they represented the understanding the Magi had of the position of the Christ in history and religion. There is no record that the Magi presented gifts to each other as well. This civil holiday is an important part of the year for many manufacturers and retailers in several countries.

Christmas is a religious festival observed by Christians. It is also very popular to children who believe in Father Christmas, and expect to find presents left for them on Christmas Morning.

When the Catholic Church began to convert pagans to Christianity they used the pagan celebrations for the Winter solstice as a means to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It was called Christ Mass and church services were all day long and then they ate dinner. The pagans used the evergreen to celebrate the winter solstice because it was the only plant that was alive. The church took that and used it to explain the trinity because there are 3 points on the tree. The Germans turned the pine into the Christmas tree by adding candles and other decorations and they brought this to America with them. Much of our traditions come from the 18th century. When Dickens wrote his Christmas story he ended it with everyone having a big dinner, poppers, and gifts so people began to do these things. Santa Clause comes from the legend of St. Nicholas who gave gifts to children. The red and white Santa that we know comes from a 1900's Coke Cola ad showing Santa in the product colors of red and white. Rudolf the Red Nose reindeer comes from a Gene Autry song in the 1950's and then was turned into a TV show for children at Christmas. Many of the Christmas carols are German songs that came with the immigrants to the United States. Silent Night was translated from German. The most recent addition to Christmas is Black Friday. This only has been going on for the last 20 years or so.
