The growth of English as a common language started with the massive colonial empire of the United Kingdom, which in 1921 covered one quarter of the world's land and one quarter of the world's population. The United Kingdom, of course, had English as its language. The expansion of English continued after the Second World War, when the United States became a global superpower. Directly after the war, The economy of the USA was half of all the world's product, and its economic might in the world has only waned slightly in comparison to all other countries, with its economy now worth a good quarter of the world's GDP. What you could possibly ascertain from all of this is that old saying, "money makes the world go 'round", or at least makes a language spread.
