Historically, the British, who conquered most widely, spoke English. They colonized North America - most North Americans are descended from the colonists and speak English. They conquered parts of South America, and those pockets speak English. They conquered Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India.

Currently, Modern English, sometimes described as the first global lingua franca, is the dominant international language in communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy.

Because unlike other languages, English is taught in every country in the world and many people can understand English than other languages. There you go; hope that will help.

Umm, English is not actually taught in every country in the world. It has, however, definitely become the lingua franca(most common language, which in the West used to be French, and Latin before that) of modern commerce and communication, is currently the most widely-spoken language in terms of geography, and likely will become the most-spoken language in the world at some point. (Mandarin Chinese is still the language the most people in the world can understand.)

English is becoming a very popular universal language because all around the world, the English language is spoken and it has been spread.

England colonized several territories, including much in Africa, Asia, Oceania, North America, the Caribbean and a few in Latina and South America. But the true spread of the English language isn't from merely owning the land but the enormous trade boom that England Had. Unlike other colonial powers (France, Spain, and Portugal) England had huge expanses of trade and thus the language spread faster. Until WWII French was the universal language, because of its romanitic mannor (and ease of learning). But after WWII when Britain and USA became the supreme powers, English became the most common language of trade.

English is the language spoken in more countries then any other language, followed by French and Spanish, but Mandarin (Chinese followed by Hindi) are the the most spoken by nearly 1billion each. English will probably never be a universal language because of the dificulty in learning it. Unlike Spanish or French, English has far too many rules and words to be used internationally. CHinese and Hindi are also very difficult languages. It is suspected that one day, English as a hybrid between it and a more Latin based counterpart will becaome a world language.

What language is universal?

Universal Language is a language which is spoken world wide. At this point there is no Universal Language really, because not every person can speak English. Therefore English is not the universal Language, and nor is any other language in the world. It is possible that one day there will be a language that will be the Universal Language, but for it to get Universal status, it needs to be a language that every single person in the world speaks fluently. There is debates and discusions about English possibly becoming a universal language, but i have doubts about its future as a main language, because as the Chinese and Indian economy are growing, their countries status in the world are becoming more and more important, and alreadt more people are choosing to study Chinese and Arabic languages over English.
