Franklin D. Roosevelt won the 1932 presidential election defeating incumbent President Herbert Hoover. In the 1932 presidential election Franklin Roosevelt received 472 electoral votes (89%) and Herbert Hoover received 59 electoral votes (11%). The popular vote totals were Roosevelt 22,829,501 and Hoover 15,760,684. Socialist Party candidate Norman Thomas received 884,781 popular votes for President, but no electoral votes.
Herbert Hoover was a Protestant, a conservative Republican, and a well-known figure from his work as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Alfred E. (Al) Smith, the governor of New York, was a liberal/progressive, a Catholic, and someone who opposed Prohibition. America in the 1920s was seeing a shocking rise in Ku Klux Klan membership, as well as a backlash against what some Americans believed were the overly permissive aspects of the "Roaring Twenties." Many Americans feared voting for a Catholic, and others wanted Prohibition to be maintained; there was a consensus among these voters that a conservative candidate would be more likely to stand for traditional morality.
On radio, which played a big role in the campaign, Smith's style was perceived by some as harsh and aloof, and while Hoover too had problems sounding conversational on the air, he had the incumbent president (Coolidge) and the political establishment on his side. In the end, although Smith was popular with Democrats and progressives, and even some celebrities (like Babe Ruth) campaigned for him, he lost to Hoover in a landslide.

one of the reasons Herbert hoover won the presidency in 1928 was because he told voters that he was the right choice to maintain economic prosperity. hoover boldly claimed that "we in America today are nearly to the final triumph over poverty than ever before in the history of any land." smiths campaign focused mainly on issues facing city dwellers. this concerned some rural voters. smith's religious faith also became an issue. he was the first catholic to run for president. his opponents stirred up fears that smith wold be controlled by the pope and other church officials. in the end, hoover won easily, gaining 58 percent of the popular vote.

"Hoover cart" -- the remains of the old tin Lizzie being pulled by a mule During part of the great depression of the 1930's when Herbert Hoover was president, many auotomobile owners could not afford gasoline to power their cars so would cut off the rear end of the vehicle, attach a tongue and pull it as a cart with either a horse or mule. Others simply took the rear end housing out of the car, built a wooden cart over the housing and pull this with a horse or mule. These carts acquired the nickname "Hoover Carts" in "honor" of President Hoover.
