Morgan dollars are no different from most other long-run series of coins in that some years and mint marks had high mintages and other years had low mintages. In addition, many Morgans were melted causing the available supplies of some years to no longer bear any relation to the number minted.

After that it becomes a simple matter of supply and demand.
