Cold War-era Propaganda has tainted the definition of socialism in the minds of many Americans, due to the Soviet Union and its allies being adversaries of the United States and because these countries maintained authoritarian forms of government.

Furthermore, socialism is sometimes equated with various social policies, including social welfare programs and regulation out of confusion and anti-socialist propaganda.

The biggest reason this attitude has not changed is because socialists are not organized enough to challenge the existing misconceptions, and socialists fail to present a concrete definition of socialism when promoting their views. Socialist views are rarely expressed in the media due to institutional bias.
