The main reason a president will pick a vice president is to balance the ticket and hopefully get more votes than he could get on his own. A liberal will ask a conservative to run with him, a man will ask a woman to run with him, a white man will ask a black man to run with him, a Christian will ask a member of the Jewish faith to run as vice president. The main reason to try and get someone who will help the main candidate to get elected to office and get more votes.
