The sad truth is that it's in people's nature. Everyone wants to dominate the rest. Those that are the dominant members/races of society have to continually defend their position by fighting and those that are the less powerful members/races continually fight to achieve dominance. In the end every side thinks that they are the "Good Guys" but all they are really doing is conforming with the most primal instincts we have, contained within the reptilian part of our brain which is located at the base of our brain, right where it meets the spinal column.
Countries start wars primarily for economic reasons: to seize oil fields, iron ore and mining lands, steel mills, agricultural areas, and living space for an expanding population. There were war started for religious reasons (the Crusades), but in the past generations, the major wars started for religious reasons were those of the Arab states against Israel - all of which went badly for the Arab states. The Soviet Union seized many smaller countries following WW2 in their quest to create a communist world, but economically communism was not viable, and the USS collapsed in 1989.
Countries have wars when they disagree on something. Say one country has a lot of oil, and Another Country wants some of there oil. If they don't give them the oil, the other country might hate them, they might start having fights, then a war starts.
(that's just an example). It's like when two people start a fight, but way worse.
