There is a part of our human nature that allows us to admire others that risk (injury, embarrassment, etc.) Gladiators risking their very lives symbolize the highest level of this inherent admiration.

∙ 13y agoGladiators were admired for the same reasons that people admire rock or rap stars today. They were the "glamor boys" of entertainment and the possibility of death or serious injury always made their appearances exciting.

3. For the fun, they put slaves, and prisoners in, not real army men of the Roman Empire, they train the slaves or prisoner and make them fight. One of them, of course isn't going to be able to defend himself.

∙ 12y agoRome had gladiators for the same reasons that we have football. It was their national "sport". The Romans, from their beginnings, had always been a people who appreciated the military. Generals were honored and a politician stood little chance of gaining political office if he had done no military service. The gladiatorial combats have been likened to mini wars by some writers. The victor, representing Rome, was rewarded and the loser, representing the conquered enemy, either perished or was disgraced.
