Brass is a rust-resistant metal compound that was relatively easily and inexpensively obtained by our ancestors, polishes easily, is malleable and has interesting musical properties at various thicknesses. Brass is comparatively light-weight compared to the other metals historically available.

It should be noted that in modern times saxophones have been made of other materials, namely fiberglass. These instruments do not have the same tonal qualities as brass saxophones, and so are not widely used for anything other than training.

Brass instruments are made of brass because brass not only produces a good sound quality when vibrated, but it is also resistant to bacteria and other microorganism growth (which is definitely a good quality to have in something you put your lips on).

It was invented to create a link between woodwind and brass instruments in military bands. What's better to do that than a woodwind instrument made of brass? It lets the sound resonate like a brass instrument while providing the warm reed sound of a Clarinet.
