Old cars dating back to the 1930's and through to the 1980's were generally larger than most cars produced today so they were heavier by size. Also, increased weight was added by metallic bumpers both back and front, and on some models, considerable metallic trim. Have a look at a '58 Buick or a'58 Oldsmobile to get an idea of how much chrome they were using. Also, dashboards were generally metal -- some had "crash padding" along the top. Less weighty fiberglass and aluminum auto components did not become popular until the '80's when the price of fuel began to skyrocket. It was not uncommon for a full-size, 1950's sedan to exceed 4,500 lbs. A Cadillac Eldorado or Buick Roadmaster went over 5,000 lbs. and performed no better than 12 miles per gallon. Most subcompacts today are around 2,500 lbs. and get at least 30 miles per gallon.

Why are new cars safer than old cars?

Not all new cars are safer than old cars, but some of the features have improved. Old cars were made with more metal, which made them safe, but also heavy consumers of gasoline. New cars make up for being made with lighter materials by having more sophisticated air bag systems along with braking systems that are more intelligent (anti-lock brakes). Power steering helps people to steer more easily, and better headlights help them to see things they may not have before.

Compare old cars to new cars?

New Cars are invented in a better technical way. Better look. and even more secure than old cars. Old cars have the bases of new cars, which means old cars were made and brought an idea to others then inventors made a better solution from an old car to an new better one. :)
