Best Answer

Tanks were invented by the British during World War 1. Obviously they were an important secret; to avoid any flapping lips from the factory workers the management explained these new devices as "water tanks for Mesopotamia".

From then on everyone referred to them as just "tanks". The name has stuck.

Why was the German defeat at the battle of the bulge so costly?

The Germans had taken so many tanks and other armored vehicles from other zones of battle, which were ultimately lost in the Battle of the Bulge. There was no hope of ever replacing these vehicles and manpower that was lost. They could have been used in a fighting retreat that would have cost many more Allied lives and additional months of battle.

Which country first used tanks during World War 1?

Tanks were a British invention. They were supposed to have been named tanks because when they were transported to France they were stored in huge crates and listed on the manifests as water tanks. I think they were used at the battle of the somme. The term "tank" was a deliberate attempt to conceal the true nature of the weapon. Did you know that the first operational tanks were Male and Female in design? The males had more guns and the females were somewhat faster, but faster is a relative word as the fastest WW ONE tank could only get up to 5 mph. They also had a bad habit of catching on fire. The Battle of the Somme is correct and also tanks were first used only to break down barbed wire and breach enemy lines so troops could follow in with little resistance... Because it is very affective. Tanks were developed in an attempt to break the trench war stalemate.

What tanks did they use in world war 1?

The first tanks (so called because to keep them secret the containers were marked as water tanks!!) were of rhomboid construction and made by the Holt tractor company. The first one "Little Willie" was really just to use for tests and development. This evolved into "Big Willie" which in turn evolved into the mark1. Subsequent models were the Mark 2,3,4,and V. Wilson and Tritton were responsible for the tanks' rapid development and deployment, from its first use in the battle of Flers and then the Battle of the Somme. Though it performed pretty poorly the Commanding Officers realised that the tanks was a far better option for modern warfare than the Calvary that had started most actions until then.

What new weapons or war machines were used on D Day?

Colonel Hobart (England) invented many vehicles that were used on D-Day. He invented amphibious tanks that could operate in water before landing on the beach ("Donald Duck", duplex drive tanks), he invented tanks that could fire flamethrowers, he invented tanks that could fire heavy mortars that could blast bunkers at point blank range, he invented tanks that could put down planks of wood that could give traction and support to tanks that ran on beach sandy ground so they would not sink in the sand. He invented tanks that could put down items so the tanks could get off the beach and get onto high ground. These tanks were called "Hobart's Funnies". After D-Day, June 6, 1944, the Americans took German beach obstacles and fitted them to American M-4 Sherman tanks, called "Rhinos", and these pieces of metal ripped up the Bouchage hedge rows and enabled the Americans and others to break out of the Normandy Peninsula.
