Why are the running lights or parking lights still on when the subaru is off?

The manual running light switch may be "on". It is located on top of the steering column, near the dashboard guages, in a 1998 Legacy. The switch operates the lights without requiring the ignition switch to be on.

Make sure that the switch on the top of the steering column in turned off. That controls the running lights on the car. FYI that switch is basically used if you are pulled over somewhere and don't need help but yet you need your lights on and still need to take your keys.

Answer If there is a way please don't do it. Remember the FOGS as you call them are still two additional lights that oncoming cars have to deal with at night. Answer Put a piece of electrical tape over the daytime running lights sensor. The headlights will automatically be turned on when you start the car. You can now push the button to turn on your Fog lights and they will stay on while you are driving. You can also pull the knob out to the first position to turn on parking/indicator lights only and your fog lights will still be able to work. Your daytime running lights will be off.

Check to make sure you didn't bump the switch on the top of the steering column (directly behind the steering wheel) that turns the parking lights on permanently. Was this the final answer? Do not bump the switch in the steering column? That's pretty lame!
