For one Protestant is an umbrella term that refers to any of the numerous denominations that sprung up after the Reformation, and Catholics are only one single Church. Additionally the majority of settlers in the US originally were from England, and England is a very Protestant Nation that has at many times throughout their history openly persecuted Catholics. But this is not the case in areas of the US that were settled primarily by either the French or Spanish or in areas that the original British Protestants were displaced by Catholics such as in areas like New York and Boston. However Catholicism still remains the largest single Church in the United States.

What does the phrase pure protestants and complicated Catholics mean?

This is a phrase from a book about the Churches in revolutionary times, obviously written from a protestant perspective. It says "How many ways can you think of to remember the differences between Catholic and protestant beliefs? Here is a simple memory jogger to help you: "pure protestants and complicated Catholics" which shows that the protestant wanted to make the Church simple and the Catholics wanted to keep all the ornaments and decorations." Which is a gross fallacy, first of all, it assumes that all the things the protestants threw out were not given to us from God, and that they weren't necessary. When it comes to decorations, there are many Catholics that are far more simple in their "decoration and ornaments" than protestants - look at the Carthusians or the Cisterians.

Did the south believe in savery?

The Southern States believed that slavery was a natural thing for peoples that were inferior to White Protestants. Protestants are specified here as Catholics, especially Irish Catholics were held in disrespect. Even during the US Civil War, Union States such as Maryland and Delaware had legal slavery. Astonishingly, slavery existed in Washington DC during the US Civil War.

How is the immaculate conception relevant to us?

The Immaculate Conception is important to Catholics because of Mariology, the extreme veneration of Mary. It is not important to Protestants, who reject the veneration of saints.

What are the differences between Christianity and protestant?

Christians are Protestants.Roman Catholic AnswerThat is a very interesting question that can not be answered for the simple reason that different people define those words differently. Catholics say that anyone who is validly baptised and professes the Nicene Creed in its traditional interpretration is a Christian. At this point in time, that would exclude the vast majority of protestants. Protestants, on the other hand, use the word "Christian" to exclude Catholics, which rather boggles the mind, as there were no other Christians than Catholics for most of the centuries between us and Biblical times.

What do protestant blieve?

The mainstream Protestant Churches (eg Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, Pentecostals, Baptists and so on) have very similar beliefs to Roman Catholics. They accept Jesus as Lord, they accept the Trinity, they regard Scripture alone as the Word of God, they believe in the name Nicene Creed as Roman Catholics do and recite each mass, as do Protestants. Protestants accept Jesus as God in human form, who died for us and for our salvation, who rose again, and ascended. They believe that The Holy Spirit dwells in each and every Christian to guide, protect and draw us to be more Christ-like for the benefit of our souls, and, most importantly, for the benefit of others. However, the main differences between Protestant beliefs and Catholic ones are firstly Protestants regard Scripture far more importantly than Catholics, and reject what they see as heretical and unBiblical beliefs that many Catholics have (such as the idea of purgatory, the over-adulation of Mary, praying to saints, veneration of relics and statues and so on), regarding these as human inventions and unscriptural. Secondly, they reject the authority of the Pope and certainly reject his infallibility, which they consider another human and counter-scriptural invention. Apart from these peripheral differences, Protestants and Catholics have very similar beliefs where they matter.

Who were the enemies of the Apostles Creed and why?

The Protestants broke away from the catholic church, because they wanted to live and worship as the Bible said, rather than, having the catholic church dictated and control the beliefs and their lives, as history has well informed us. So true Protestants resent the mention of the catholic church, in the creed. True Prostestants and catholics are vastly different.
