The ultimate reason is, however, rainfall. Regular rains promote constant agricultural production and this allows greater numbers of humans to have sufficient food. China receives huge amounts of rain along the southern and eastern coasts. The population density in various regions of China is for the most part directly correlated with the amount of rainfall those areas receive.
Even the population losses of World War II and the Chinese civil war were offset in a relatively short time by a high Birth Rate. The PRC has eventually been forced to attempt to regulate birth rates by law, to avoid overpopulation.
