Why are people more at risk of alcohol addiction than other drug addictions?

first and foremost, STUPIDITY!! there are several contributing factors to drug and alcohol abuse. some are genetic, passed from mother to child, some are a result of peer pressure or depression. most addicts learn the habbit.

∙ 14y agoAlcohol is legal, which means it is much easier to procure than other drugs. If you want to buy heroin, you will have to find a heroin dealer. And, unless your friends are a bunch of druggies, this is going to be very difficult to do. But if you want to drink, you just have to go into any bar or liquor store.
I have been both a heroin addict and an alcoholic, and I can say personally that quitting heroin was much, much easier than quitting alcohol. I relapsed on heroin just once. I relapsed on alcohol SEVEN TIMES.
The reason is, once I had erased and forgotten all of my dealers' phone numbers, I couldn't get heroin anymore. But there are 8 liquor stores within a 10-block radius of my apartment building. Actually, there is a liquor store right next door to my apartment building!
It was just so easy to get liquor. The only times you can't get hard liquor in New York City are between 4 AM and 9 AM on weekdays, when all the bars and liquor stores are closed. And even though you can't get liquor, you can still buy beer at convenience stores and bodegas. The only time you can't get any alcohol at all is from 4 AM to noon on Sundays. So you just have to remember to stock up on Saturday night. And if you're an alcoholic, procuring alcohol is the one thing you're not gonna forget to do.
