Why can't I get any Internet on my laptop even though I am connected to my router?

Depending on your home network setup, there could be many different reasons why you can't access the internet. For a setup that you are describing, you would need a setup like the following to have your hardware correct to reach the internet.
Hardware:
cable/phone/satellite feed-->modem--->router--->device connected to router.
Assuming that you have that setup, you would then need to make sure that all the software (programs) for the various devices I just described are installed correctly and in working order. If you've done that, the final step would be to make sure that you have all the settings correct across those various devices so that you can connect to the net. Unless I know your specific setup, I really can't be more precise.
The setup above is correct, and I think all the settings are right, and my router works fine because I am able to connect other devices to it. I sometimes have a connection through my laptop but then it will sometimes it will go off and I am not sure why.

I'm pretty sure the answer to this is "yes". I'm only stating this from personal experience, though. I have a Macbook and my mom has a PC laptop. The wireless internet router at our home is not by Apple and the wireless internet works on both of our computers.

If you are wanting to go wireless within your house with other devices then a Wi-Fi router is recommended for purchase or a hardwired router if you want multiple computers to be connected to the Internet. If you are needing to connect to the Internet in general though, you'll want a DSL modem first.

If you mean the devices in your house that are connected to the internet, there is no need to download an application. If you type your IP (Internet Protocol) address into your internet browser, you can see all the devices that are connected to your router. Just simply log into it and there you go. Be sure not to mess with anything in your routers settings though.

"your connection is excellent" refers to the wireless connection between your lap top and the hub/router only. You can get this even if your hub is not connected to the web at all.

Can you use an old wireless internet card on a new laptop?
Yup! So long as the laptop can physically accommodate the card and you've got the drivers for the card and your operating system, the laptop should have no problem with it. You might not get optimal speed/performance by mixing old and new, but it should certainly work. Sometimes the type of wireless connection you have will interfere with your ability to connect. If you have a WEP connection, you can switch to WPA to see if you can connect.

Essentially a router can connect multiple computers to internet and are fairly simple to set up and are not that expensive. ( Configuration for Ethernet networks is practically just plugging in the right wires in the right places) Modern routers support NAT which allows the use of a single external ip for an entire internal network so if you use a router, you will not need to contact your ISP at all.
