I don't know why people usually keep their eyes closed during sleep, but I know that mine do open early in the morning (a couple hourse before my alarm goes off). It kind of freaked out my husband when he saw it. He thought I was awake at first, but if he watched quietly, after a couple minutes my eyes will close and immediately go into REM. Weird.
