WWII; the US was intentionally and deliberately attacked by an extremely powerful military force from the Empire of Japan.

2. The War of 1812 could've been avoided; just keep haggling along with the British.
3. The Mexican War could've been avoided; purchase Mexican lands over the years.
4. The Civil War could've been avoided; let them have their own country (CSA).
5. The Spanish-American War could've been avoided; Spain's Empire was collapsing anyway.
6. US in WWI could've been avoided, the US missed 4/5ths of it already.
7. Korea could've been avoided; let the South fall.
8. Vietnam could've been avoided; let the South fall (it fell anyway).
9. Indian Wars (1622-1890), fight in self defense only; no use of military force to send the nations back onto the reservations. Just learn to live with each other like today, fighting in "good guy, bad guy" scenarios only. Nearly all of the Indian Wars were the result of forcing the Indians to live somewhere else (reservations usually), this involved the army; which resulted in battle.

I don't think it was needed but both the Western powers that allied against him and the Iraqi government were not smart enough to allow it to happen without a war.

There are wars because people will always have different points of view. Some of these people are powerful, and prefer to fix these differences with war/taking over the country that differs. It's like having an argument: depending on the person, the slightest thing could set them off. It's just bigger and has far more severe consequences.
