All countries can be referred to as states. It means, in this case, they are self governing and not a satellite or possession of Another Country or state. The states of the United States also have a certain amount of independence for self government, which is one of the reasons they are called states.

The word "state" means an autonomous political unit. The United States, as its name suggests, is a a union or confederation of states, each of which is to a certain extent self-governing. However the Union itself is also an autonomous political unit, which means that the country as a whole is a state.

The United States shares aspects of its structure with other confederations such as Canada, Switzerland, South Africa and Australia.
