Having seen the economic and political problems associated with divine or absolute rule (and hereditary aristocracy), they wanted to avoid these impediments. The rule "by the people" was not a new idea, but most of Europe still retained their monarchies, and these often came into conflict with the wishes of their people.
It was also a logical extension to retain the Parliamentary form, and simply omit the king.

The three main reasons why Americans fought for their freedom and independence was for: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
The reason for the constitutional democracy in political systems was, that no one body of government would have more power than the other. All branches of the government would have to work together as a team.
An example of this could be, after the American Revolutionary War, when the leaders met to work on the structures and organization of the government for the new nation, the leaders wanted to make George Washington, King of the United States of America.
Washington refused. He pointed out that the nation had battled with a king who had total control and power over all of the people, and that the United States needed to be free and independent for all Americans, and that all enjoy the victory of the rights that were gained by winning the war.
The Founding Fathers of the nation that were once British colonies, wanted a new government that offered much much more freedom then the English one under King George. The constitutional democracy they formed protected the God given rights of all people and allowed the citizens of the new nation the USA to vote for those persons needed to run the government. This new nation withstood the test of time and became a major force for democracy in the world, much of which was and is now filled with undemocratic nations.
One piece of evidence is that the Founders did not mention political parties in the Constitution. Additionally, in Federalist Paper 10, James Madison warned against factions, but did not specifically anticipate the emergence of political parties. Lastly, the lack of a constitutional framework or provision for political parties in the election process suggests that they did not anticipate their role in presidential elections.
They were the people that first set up something.

Individually, America's Founders were by many contemporary standards 'elitists,' if not in necessarily negative ways. As a group, the Founders combined respect for elitism and pluralism in their remarkably original political ideas -- and in the structuring and divisions of the 'grand experiment' of the new nation that they founded.
They invented many useful tools and founded important stratigies that were used later in Europe and Spain, founders of the Americas.
They added the Bill of Rights to the Constitution.
Now, political parties have chosen electors by popular vote. Parties also changed their method of nominating presidential candidates, giving the people more of a voice. The Electoral College system has had to adapt to the growth of democracy.
