Australia had always relied upon England to come to its defence. England was the "Mother Country", the founder of Australia, and one of its chief allies. However, during World War II, England's power base was eroded with the fall of Singapore to the Japanese, and its morale eroded badly. It was busy engaging in war with Germany on the other side of the world, and defending its own turf; thus it did not have the resources to come to Australia's aid when Singapore fell to the Japanese. This is why Australia then turned to the USA.
