Lolo Soetoro was a geographer and a businessman, and Indonesia was his home. After Barack's mom, Ann, married him, they decided they would move to Jakarta. Young Barack was about five, and they lived there for five years as a family. (Ann and Lolo also had a daughter, Barack's half-sister Maya.) By most accounts, young Barack got along with his step-dad and enjoyed the adventure of living in a new country. Barack's mom also came to love Indonesia-- she was teaching and tutoring, and learning more about the culture (she would ultimately become an expert on women in Indonesian society, and she received her PhD in anthropology). Things went well for a while. But when economic and social conditions in Indonesia began to worsen, Barack's mom wanted to make arrangements for him to return to Hawaii-- he was happy to go, since he missed his friends and missed his maternal grandparents. By the time he was in fifth grade, he was back in Hawaii.
