Economically it was a good move. You have settlers in N.A. growing, mining, cutting, or whatever the Natural Resources. They send them to Britain. Britain turns them into manufactured goods which they sell to people in Britain, trade with other countries, and ... also sell back to the British colonists.

the American revolution only included the 13 colonies (Britain's colonies in what is now America). the western territories of America had nothing to do with it. the western side of America only joined the US when US president James K. Polk came to power and introduced the idea of Manifest Destiny, which is the idea that Americans are entitled to own all of North America. :) the territories had no choice of joining America or not.
At the time of the American Revolutionary War, the 13 original British/American colonies were fairly prosperous. The American colonies had provided Great Britain with a strong foothold in North America below its possession of British Canada. The American colonies, if not overtaxed and basically taken for granted by Great Britain, might have made the British Empire even stronger than it already was. There is nothing that would have prevented Great Britain from remaining to this day the most powerful nation in the world. This is of course subject to debate.
