Christopher Columbus set sail on August 3rd 1492 on a voyage around the globe with the intention of landing on the shores of India. The objective was to discover a new trade route that would make imports less expensive and exports more profitable. Instead, he found an island in The Bahamas and called it San Salvador.

Columbus made four voyages to the "New World" and in his last in 1502, disembarked in the south coast of Central America. That all he saw of the mainland, in all his voyages he spent the time discovering the Antilles (Caribbean) specially in the island of Hispaniola what is today the Dominican Republic, where his family setup down.
