Europeans were interested in acquiring luxury goods from "the East" (Asia and Arabia), including Ceylon, cinnamon, cardamom, textiles, and gems. A number of Europeans had attempted to reach China by the 12th century, although these expeditions did not make trade routes easier since the middle territories were still controlled by Turkish forces.

To make money and win their fortunes, of course.

Overland traders since Marco Polo had brought Indian spices such as pepper and curry, and other oriental spices, to Europe. These were enormously expensive and rare after being carried by camel caravans from China and India, through the Arabian deserts and past the Arabian thieves. Columbus figured that one ship-load of spices from the orient, delivered to Spain or Italy, would be worth the risk.
