Europeans began to take an interest in China. They had made many inroads there first by explorers then later as imperialists to take advantage of the new markets that were found in China. The major European powers and Japan all took it upon themselves to either annex parts of China or create powerful sphere's of interest there.

Overland traders since Marco Polo had brought Indian spices such as pepper and curry, and other oriental spices, to Europe. These were enormously expensive and rare after being carried by camel caravans from China and India, through the Arabian deserts and past the Arabian thieves. Columbus figured that one ship-load of spices from the orient, delivered to Spain or Italy, would be worth the risk.
